The Exploring Islam Foundation has launched its London-centric “Inspired by Muhammad” campaign after YouGov opinion poll came up with results showing that 69% of UK citizens believe that Islam encourages repression of women, and that nearly half of them disagree Muslims have a positive impact on British society.

The campaign is designed to improve the public understanding of Islam and Muslims. It show cases of Britons demonstrating how Muhammad inspires them to contribute to society, with a focus on women’s rights, social justice and the environment.

The high profile media campaign includes adverts at London bus stops, tube stations and cabs. The posters of Muslim personalities go with captions like “I believe in women’s rights. So did Muhammad” or “I believe in protecting the environment. So did Muhammad”.

The website provides online support for the campaign by hosting straightforward information about Islam, Muhammad and British Muslims. The website is designed to meet the need the YouGov poll highlighted for accessible information: 60% percent of people say they don’t know very much about Islam; 31% say information about Islam is not very accessible; 33% would like to know more about Islam and just 3% say they get their information from Muslim organisations.

The website also includes 12 videos that depict several prominent UK Muslims talking about their life experience and Islam, in relation to human rights, environment, animal welfare, healthcare, coexistence, social justice, women’s rights, education and charity.
