The liberalization of Pakistan’s media sector in 2002 has led to the sector’s rapid development but has also resulted in numerous challenges for journalists, including freedom of speech vs. self-censorship and media liberalization vs. partial radicalization. Pakistan has also been repeatedly recognized as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. After more than a decade of media liberalization, this symposium will assess its impact.  Two sessions will explore the following areas:

Session 1 - Turns and trends in the media’s transformation
Session 2 - Pakistan’s media: between press freedom and self-censorship

The conference will be held in English. We invite international media academics and political scientists, economists, academic lawyers and journalists to participate.
