New Book: Wired Citizenship: Youth Learning and Activism in the Middle East

The book examines the evolving patterns of youth learning and activism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In today’s digital age, in which formal schooling often competes with the peer-driven outlets provided by social media, youth all over the globe have forged new models of civic engagement, rewriting the script of what it means to live in a democratic society. As a result, state-society relationships have shifted—never more clearly than in the MENA region, where recent uprisings were spurred by the mobilization of tech-savvy and politicized youth.

New Report: Mapping Digital Media: Indonesia

The Open Society Foundations released its report Mapping Digital Media: Indonesia written by Kuskridho Ambardi, Gilang Parahita, Lisa Lindawati, Adam Sukarno & Nella Aprilia. "The Mapping Digital Media project examines the global opportunities and risks created by the transition from traditional to digital media. Covering 60 countries, the project examines how these changes affect the core democratic service that any media system should provide: news about political, economic, and social affairs."

New Book: Rebel Music: Race, Empire, and the New Muslim Youth Culture

The book analyses the connection between music and political activism among Muslim youth around the world and looks at how hip-hop, jazz, and reggae, along with Andalusian and Gnawa music, have become a means of building community and expressing protest in the face of the West’s policies in the War on Terror. Hisham Aidi interviews musicians and activists, and reports from music festivals and concerts in the United States, Europe, North Africa, and South America, to give us an up-close sense of the identities and art forms of urban Muslim youth.

Book: Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World

The book looks at unrest of the Arab Spring from an unusual perspective, the sexual lives of Arab men and women. Sexual attitudes and behaviors are shaped by politics and economics, religion and tradition, gender and generations — not only a reflection of the conditions that led to the uprisings, but also a measure of hard-won reforms in the years to come.
