New Issue of the Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research

The Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research released its new issue (Vol. 7, Issue 1, 2014), edited by Noureddine Miladi from the Qatar University. The issue focuses on representation of Muslims in the British media and the future of traditional media in the Middle East region.

Book: Digital Media and Society: Transforming Economics, Politics and Social Practices

Referencing key contemporary debates on issues such as surveillance, identity, the global financial crisis, the digital divide and Internet politics, this book is a critical intervention in discussions on the impact of the proliferation of digital media technologies on politics, the economy and social practices. Divided into three parts, the first highlights the way in which digital media challenges normative conceptions of the public sphere and discusses this in relation to the creation of new forms of knowledge through the digitization of scholarly resources and the impact of digital media on traditional conceptions of identity. The second part focuses on the digital economy, emphasizing the opportunities it affords through the creative industries, as well as the threat posed by the computerization of the financial industry, and the third part focuses on uses of digital media through a number of case studies relating to online reading, the new social movements, surveillance and the developing world.

Book: Religion, Media, and Social Change

The book explores the correlation between the study of religion, media, and popular culture and broader sociological theorizing on religious change. Contributions devote serious attention to broadly-defined media including technologies, institutions, and social and cultural environments, as well as mass-mediated popular culture such as film, music, television, and computer games. This interdisciplinary collection addresses important theoretical and methodological questions by connecting the study of media and popular culture to current perspectives, approaches, and discussions in the broader sociological study of religion.

It explores: the religious content of media texts and the reception of those texts by religious consumers who appropriate and reuse them in their own religious work; how new forms of media provide fresh locations within which new religious voices emerge, people reimagine the "task" of religion, and develop and perform religious identity.

New Book: Palestine-Israel in the Print News Media: Contending Discourses

The book is concerned with conceptions of language, knowledge, and thought about political conflict in the Middle East in two national news media communities: the United States and the United Kingdom. Arguing for the existence of national perspectives which are constructed, distributed, and reinforced in the print news media, this study provides a detailed linguistic analysis of print news media coverage of four recent events in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in order to examine ideological patterns present in print news media coverage. The two news communities are compared for lexical choices in news stories about the conflict, attribution of agency in the discussion of conflict events, the inclusion or exclusion of historical context in explanations of the conflict, and reliance upon essentialist elements during and within print representations of Palestine-Israel.

Report: The Attitudes of Online Users in the MENA Region to Cybersafety, Security and Data Privacy

The Rassed research program at Qatar’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology released its report The Attitudes of Online Users in the MENA Region to Cybersafety, Security and Data Privacy. The study "benchmarks the experience of Internet users in the region against global users in five key areas: access to technology, attitudes towards the Internet, levels of concern, trust in online actors and user behaviors." The survey included 2,793 respondents from across 14 countries in the Middle East.

Book: The Dynamics of Sunni-Shia Relationships: Doctrine, Transnationalism, Intellectuals and the Media

This book presents wide-ranging and up-to-date research that sheds light on the political, sociological and ideological processes that are affecting the dynamics within, as well as the relationships between, the Shia and Sunni worlds. Among the themes discussed are the ideological and doctrinal evolutions that are taking place, the contextualisation of the main protagonists’ political practices, transnational networks, and the role of intellectuals, religious scholars and the media in shaping and informing this dynamic relationship.

This book sets out to analyse the relation between social media and politics by investigating the power of the internet, and more specifically social media, in the political and social discourse. The volume collects original research on the use of social media in political campaigns, electoral marketing, riots and social revolutions, presenting a range of case studies from across the world as well as theoretical and methodological contributions. Examples that explore the use of social media in electoral campaigns include, for instance, studies on the use of Facebook in the 2012 US presidential campaign and in the 2011 Turkish general elections. The final section of the book debates the usage of Twitter and other Web 2.0 tools in mobilizing people for riots and revolutions, presenting and analysing recent events in Istanbul and Egypt, among others.
